Insurify is a resource for shoppers to compare car and home insurance rates, but they recently tasked their data analysts with reviewing tons of data regarding drivers across the country. Utilizing data from 2.5 million car insurance applications, Insurify identified those drivers who have been at fault for causing a prior accident and compiled a list of the top 20 cities in America for automobile collisions based on the percentage of all drivers with previous at-fault vehicle collisions.
Unfortunately, 7 of the top 20 cities were in South Carolina. Coming in at number 5, Rock Hill was identified as having 18.7% of drivers with a prior collision that was their fault. Nearly 2 out of every 10 drivers in Rock Hill have caused a previous collision! Compared to the national average of 12.4%, Rock Hill has 50% more drivers with a history of causing accidents. Other South Carolina Cities on the list included Spartanburg (#18), Summerville (#16), Greer (#13), Charleston (#12), Goose Creek (#10), and John’s Island (#1).
In a separate report, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety indicated 36 vehicle fatalities in York County in 2020. There were 1,060 fatalities in South Carolina in 2020, resulting in a median of 14 in all counties. York County is tied at 10th for the most fatalities per county in South Carolina, with 150% more vehicle fatalities than the median for all counties in the State.
Traffic Volume Also Increasing
In addition to analyzing data regarding prior collisions, Insurify also reported on the increase in traffic over the past year by utilizing Apple Maps’ Covid Mobility Data. For York County, vehicle traffic increased 38% in 2020.
Considering the data presented by Insurify and fatality data, York County can be a dangerous place to operate a vehicle. With Covid restrictions winding down and society returning to normal, it is clear that the continued increase in traffic in York County will lead to more automobile collisions. We hope that everyone stays safe in their travels this year.
